National Environmental Management System

The National Environmental Management System is an important part of doing business at Transport Canada. This system includes everything we do to manage our environmental obligations. It takes into account how our operations impact the environment and the steps we take to reduce that impact. It also monitors our environmental performance.

A very important element of the system is that it makes sure we comply with environmental laws such as the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, and federal horizontal initiatives such as Theme IV – Shrinking the Environmental Footprint – Beginning with Government of the Federal Sustainable Development Strategy.

How does the system work exactly?

First, Transport Canada determines how its operations, services and products impact the environment. Once we have a clear understanding of these impacts, we set objectives and targets to reduce those impacts. To view the targets and associated implementation plans, please visit the National Environmental Management System - Target Framework.

The following programs are all part of the National Environmental Management System:

Federal Sustainable Development Strategy – Theme IV – Shrinking the Environmental Footprint – Beginning with Government

This section of the National Environmental Management System falls under the umbrella of the Federal Sustainable Development Strategy. The Federal Sustainable Development Strategy takes a government-wide approach to bring together common goals to reduce the environmental impact of the federal government overall. Under the Federal Sustainable Development Strategy, departments must have a Departmental Sustainable Development Strategy. Transport Canada’s Departmental Sustainable Development Strategy highlights how we support the Federal Sustainable Development Strategy through various activities.

There are four themes under the Federal Sustainable Development Strategy. The Environmental Protection program, along with other Transport Canada groups, is responsible for meeting Theme IV – Shrinking the Environmental Footprint – Beginning with Government. Theme IV focuses on reducing the environmental impact of our offices through activities such as using less paper and energy and buying environmentally-friendly products, etc.

To view the targets and associated implementation plans, please visit the National Environmental Management System - Target Framework.

Greening Federal Transportation Operations

Beyond reducing the environmental impact from our offices as outlined above, the Environmental Protection program sets targets to reduce the environmental impact of all Transport Canada operations across the country. This includes targets for areas such as ozone depleting substances and environmental emergency response. To view the targets set out for Transport Canada, please visit the National Environmental Management System - Target Framework.

Environmental Monitoring and Oversight program

The Environmental Monitoring and Oversight program monitors all facilities owned and operated by Transport Canada, and facilities leased to third parties to verify that they are being managed in an environmentally responsible manner. These monitoring activities are tracked through the National Environmental Management System.
