Civil Aviation Safety Alerts (CASA) No. 2017-05

ATTENTION:

OWNERS, OPERATORS AND MAINTAINERS OF PRATT & WHITNEY PW200 SERIES TURBOSHAFT ENGINES

Issuing Office: Continuing Airworthiness
File Classification No.: Z 5000-35
RDIMS No.: 12408937
Document No.: CASA 2017-05
Issue No.: 01
Effective Date: 2017-07-25

Post Compressor Wash Drying Runs

Purpose:

The purpose of this Civil Aviation Safety Alert (CASA) is to remind individuals who conduct compressor washes on PW200 series engines that drying runs must be conducted soon after the compressor wash is completed. (Refer to the applicable engine maintenance manual for exact time limits and drying run duration.)

Background:

Pratt & Whitney Canada has learned that some operators would carry out compressor washes after the last flight of the day and not conduct the post compressor wash drying run until the next morning. Doing this can lead to corrosion issues on many engine internal components and adversely affect the serviceability of the engine. Drying runs must be conducted within maintenance manual recommended time limits.

Recommended Action:

Transport Canada recommends that operators and maintainers of PW200 series engines familiarize themselves with Pratt & Whitney Service Information Letter PW200-065 and follow maintenance instructions provided by the manufacturer.
